1. Brutal Love

Rating: 4.1/5. From 115 votes. Show votes.

The lyrics look at a failing relationship that both parties are trying their best to fix, but no matter what they do, the end just seems more and more inevitable. In this, both of them are looking at their last night together (turn out the lights, close your eyes) as their break up is coming up (turn up the silence, the heartache of your life). They want to be together but they know they’re just not compatible (dance forever under the light, this brutal love) and the only way to fix their relationship is just to leave each other (oh how you want it, you’re begging for it but you can’t have it even if you tried).

The two have clearly been through a lot, possibly being childhood friends (old toys, this plastic heart) but the more the two look outwards, the more they see that what they have isn’t what they want (loners and fools are tearing me apart) as they also begin to weigh out other options (the eyes of temptation, the flesh and my bones, hello stranger I’m a disaster). It’s not their fault they’re like this and they chalk it up to bad luck as they try to claw at every reason to be together (anguish and shame, the modern fool).

Perhaps it’s the lack of romance and chemistry (bad sex, bad love) but the two can’t take it anymore (something for my troubled mind) as they’re running into neverending dead ends. As the night ends, the two conclude that enough is enough and party ways before they get in too deep (drop dead hideous, how low is this brutal love?) and end in an unhappy marriage.

– song meaning written by u/potlah on r/GreenDay

Turn out the lights
Close your eyes
Turn up the silence
The heartache of your life
Dance forever
Under the lights
This brutal love

Oh how you want it
You’re begging for it
But you can’t have it
Even if you try
It’s in the clutches
In the hands of
This brutal love

Old toys
This plastic heart
Loners and fools
Are tearing me apart
Here comes trouble
The uninvited
This brutal love

Danger
Not quite at home
The eyes of temptation
The flesh on my bones
Hello stranger
I’m a disaster
This brutal love

Bad luck
Bitters and soda
Anguish and shame
The modern fool
Bad sex
Buy me a train wreck
Something for my troubled mind

Bad luck
Bitters and soda
Anguish and shame
The modern fool
Bad love
Kiss me I’m loaded
Something for my troubled mind

Drop out
Drop dead hideous
How low is this brutal love

2. Missing You

The author wakes up feeling rather strange (it’s unnerving, I know there is something I’m forgetting), being alone in his room for the first time in a while (waking up feeling naked in my clothes). He does everything to try to figure out why his heart is beating so fast (I searched the room I lost my head) and realizes that all his anxiety was stemming from his girlfriend being away for some reason (you’re not around and I’m a complete disaster). He texts her telling her how much he misses her (remember, was the first time) and starts talking to her about their times together (I told you I loved you at the bus station?).

Despite this anxiety, the author feels safe knowing she’ll be back soon (I’m not lost cause I’m just missing you) even though it gets hard sometimes not being with her (it gets so hard when I’m missing you).

– song meaning written by u/potlah on r/GreenDay

Waking up, feeling naked
In my clothes inside a room that’s vacant
Lost my nerve, it’s un-nerving
I know there is something I’m forgetting

I searched the moon I lost my head
I even looked under the bed
I punched the walls I hit the street
I’m pounding the pavement looking

I’m missing you
I’m missing you
You’re not around
And I’m a complete disaster
I’m missing you

Remember, was the first time
I told you I loved you at the bus station
Don’t forget, cause it’s not over
I’m not lost cause I’m just missing you

I searched the moon I lost my head
I even looked under the bed
I punched the walls I hit the street
I’m pounding the pavement looking

I’m missing you
I’m missing you
You’re not around
And I’m a complete disaster
I’m missing you

Well she’s my blood, well she’s my soul
I get so lost out in the cold
Feels so far, like this lone star
It gets so hard when I’m missing you

I’m missing you
I’m missing you
You’re not around
And I’m a fucking disaster
I’m missing you

The song goes through the daily activities of a couple, from leaving to work and coming home to each other, to sleeping and waking up next to each other (verse 1). Despite this comfortable situation, the couple fails to find meaning and breaks up (take a walk out of my life), perhaps as a result of personal issues like a mid-life crisis. The two try their best to rekindle their love (before all the flames burn out) knowing that it’s coming to an end regardless.

– song meaning written by u/potlah on r/GreenDay

Say hello from your window
Say goodbye from your car
Say goodnight from your pillow
Say so long from the stars

Take a walk out of my life
Sing to me a lullaby
Cradle songs from a midlife
Don’t forget to pass me by

As my imagination runs away
On the Eighth Avenue Serenade
Meet me at the bathroom stall
Met me at the whispering wall
Before all the flames burn out

4. Drama Queen

The song follows a female that the author knows and is a story of her growing up. The song starts with her teen years where she was busy partying and getting drunk (she is so wet and reckless). She has a happy family for what it’s worth (daddy’s little bundle of joy) and through the hardships of growing up (her life is now unfolding) does she learn how tough life can get (she’s old enough to bleed now). As time goes by, she struggles with stuff everyone else does from her love life (did you find your saviour?) to travelling for studies (from New York to San Francisco) and learning to be an adult (you better call a lawyer).

– song meaning written by u/potlah on r/GreenDay

She is my Drama Queen
She is so wet and reckless
She is my Drama Queen
She dangles from her necklace

Daddy’s little bundle of joy
Out of a magazine
Everyone’s Drama Queen
Is old enough to bleed now

She is my Drama Queen
Her life is now unfolding
There goes my Drama Queen
What do you think she’s holding?

Hey little Drama Queen
Oh did you find your savior?
Oh little Drama Queen
You better call a lawyer

Daddy’s little bundle of joy
Out of a magazine
Everyone’s Drama Queen
Is old enough to bleed now

Hey little Drama Queen
From New York to San Francisco
Everyone’s Drama Queen,
I think she’s going psycho

Daddy’s little bundle of joy
Out of a magazine
Everyone’s Drama Queen
Is old enough to bleed now
She’s old enough to bleed now

“It was a friend of ours who took an early exit. He was a very close friend and he just never grew up. He just lived with his glory days behind him and didn’t realize that his glory days were now in front of him. We love him dearly but life happened.”

– Mike Dirnt

The song touches on the topic of suicide. Despite growing old, the person the song is about never accepted his age (you’re not so young but you’re still dumb), constantly looking into his past rather than accepting he’s getting older and should they’re in the past and move on to better things (you’re numb to your old glory but now it’s gone). Whilst his friend goes through inner turmoils, the author gets more success in his life but can’t seem to get through to his friend to find better things in life (I fell in love but it didn’t catch your fall), rather it may have pushed him further into his depressive thoughts. Although the author tries his best to fake a good front, he himself is going through issues himself (then I crashed into a wall, then I fell to pieces on the floor) whilst his friend has given up completely (now you’re sick to death/here goes nothing, the shouting is over!) despite trying the author’s advice (you fell in love but then you just fell apart). Similarly, the author had such thoughts when he was younger (I once was old enough to know better) but never succumb to suicide like his friend (then I was too young to care).

– song meaning written by u/potlah on r/GreenDay

Hey, little kid
Did you wake up late one day and you’re not so young
But you’re still dumb and you’re numb to your own glory
Well now it’s gone

I fell in love
But it didn’t catch your fall
Then I crashed into a wall
Then I fell to pieces on the floor
Now you’re sick to death

Bombs away
Here goes nothin’, the shouting is over
Hey X-Kid, bombs away
Here goes nothin’, the shouting is over and out
Over and out again

I once was old enough to know better
Then I was too young to care, but who cares
I probably would but Hollywood is dead and gone
You fell in love but then you just fell apart
Like a kick, in the head
You’re an X-Kid and you never even got started again

Bombs away
Here goes nothin’, the shouting is over
Hey X-Kid, bombs away
Here goes nothin’, the shouting is over and out
Over and out again

And you will be searching your soul
And you got lost and out of control
You went over the edge of joking
Died of a broken heart

Hey, little kid
Did you wake up late one day
You’re not so young, but you’re still dumb
You’re an X-kid and you never even got started again

Bombs away
Here goes nothin’, the shouting is over
Hey X-Kid, bombs away
Here goes nothin’, the shouting is over and out

Hey X-Kid, bombs away
Here goes nothing, the shoutings over

Hey X-Kid, bombs away
Here goes nothing, the shoutings over and out
Over and out
Over and over and out

6. Sex, Drugs And Violence

The song touches on the author blaming everything else (all my life trouble follows me like a mystery girl) like his education for his failures in life (sex, drugs and violence/English, Math and Science). No matter how much it’s his fault, he finds some way to blame his circumstances (I’ve been chasing round a memory/I don’t want to be an imbecile but Jesus made me that way). The author does learn the harsh reality of having a lack of self-awareness (now I pay but I can’t pay attention, teaching me the hardest lessons of my life) and wish he reflected more in the past before he got to the state he is in today (sometimes I must regress).

– song meaning written by u/potlah on r/GreenDay

All my life trouble follows me like a mystery, girl
I’ve been chasing round a memory like a mystery, girl
I’ve been getting lost searching my soul all around this town
I took a wrong turn at growing up and it’s freaking me out

Back at school it never made much sense
Now I pay but I can’t pay attention
Teaching me the hardest lessons of my life

Too dumb to die I guess, but that’s the way it goes
Sometimes I must regress to

Sex, drugs and violence
English, math and science
Safety in numbers
Give me, give me danger

Well I don’t want to be an imbecile
But Jesus made me that way
All my life I’ve been running wild like a runaway
Wherever the night takes me like a stowaway

Back at home it never made much sense
Now I pay but I can’t pay attention
Teaches me the hardest lessons of my life

Too dumb to die I guess, but that’s the way it goes
Sometimes I must regress these

Sex, drugs and violence
English, math and science
Safety in numbers
Give me, give me danger

Back at home it never made much sense
I can pay but I can’t pay attention
Teaching me the hardest lessons of my life

Too dumb to die I guess, but that’s the way it goes
Sometimes I must regress to

Sex, drugs and violence
English, math and science
Safety in numbers
Give me, give me danger

“One of Train’s parents was born a hermaphrodite, and their parents cut off the penis. His/her whole life, this person wanted to be acknowledged as a man. The parents wanted the child to not be identified as a boy or a girl, and the child didn’t really have a name –one week it’s Tigger, another it’s Train. Many years ago I wrote it down, and I always wanted to write a song called ‘Little Boy Named Train.’ This happened to someone else, but there’s a part of me I was thinking about when I wrote it. There’s a line: ‘I’m always lost, I’ll never change, give me directions and I’ll get lost again.’ Kind of autobiographical.”

– Billie Joe Armstrong

Where did you come from, where have you been
It looks like you fell into the trash bin
I caught the train, I’m crashing the car
Packing for daylight, shooting for the stars

Like a lifelong daisy chain of my imagination
A rat inside a maze, I got no destination
Cause I’m a little boy named Train
Ask me again I’ll tell you the same
A little boy named Train
I don’t know where I come from
But I know where I have been

Serious people are funny to me
Funny people seem so serious
I’m always lost and nothing will change
Give me directions and I’ll get lost again

Like a lifelong daisy chain of my imagination
A rat inside a maze, I got no destination
Cause I’m a little boy named Train
Ask me again I’ll tell you the same
A little boy named Train
I don’t know where I come from
But I know where I have been

I said don’t know where I come from
But I know where I have been

8. Amanda

“You know you have those people…like, you have a first love and all the sudden it’s just like they’re a ‘re-occurring dream.’ A re-occurring dream that happens to you all the time. So, this re-occurring dream happened to me, starting with this song called ‘She.’ And then it kind of travelled its way into another song called ‘Stuart and the Ave’. And then it travelled its way to American Idiot in a song called ‘Whatsername’…but now, it’s travelled out again, and I say ‘Fuck it, I’m gonna name the girl. Fuck it, it’s been fuckin’…19 years ago.’ This song’s called ‘Amanda.'”

– Billie Joe Armstrong

The song touches on the author reminiscing about his exes and trailing to one specific one whilst walking alone one day (this foggy roundabout when I get back in town). He thinks back to their relationship and wonders if she ever thinks of him (Amanda don’t you know? That I still walk around). He does his research and finds her Facebook profile, as a completely new person from who he used to date (you’re a different woman that’s for certain, I don’t know a thing about). He debates whether to talk with her again (is this a kind of love that only hate would understand?) as he remembers the reasons they broke up in the first place (Amanda, I couldn’t be your man/I wasn’t strong enough, I wasn’t smart enough).

On the other hand, he tries to tell himself how he’s changed and she would probably give it a shot (I was a different man from five seconds ago) although it’s apparent that he isn’t as mature as he wished he was (I was a different kid from fifteen years ago). He tries anyways but gets shut down as he falls to his old immature line of reasoning (I’m not playing with your mind unless you think I am) and he even tries some old, sentimental drivel (cause you’re crushing my heart like a battering-ram) that caused them to end in the first place.

– song meaning written by u/potlah on r/GreenDay

Amanda, don’t you know
That I still walk around this foggy roundabout
When I get back in town
I was a different man from 5 seconds ago
And you’re a different woman, that’s for certain
I don’t know a thing about

Is this some kind of love
That only hate can understand
Amanda, I couldn’t be a man

Amanda, don’t you know
I wasn’t strong enough
And in your wild mind, I wasn’t smart enough
I was a different kid from 15 years ago
And you’re a different woman that’s for certain
That I wanna know about

Is this some kind of love
That only hate would understand
Amanda, I couldn’t be a man

I’m not playing with your mind
Unless you think I am
Because you’re crushing my heart
Like a battering-Ram

Is this some kind of love
That only hate would understand
Amanda, I couldn’t be a man

9. Walk Away

Rating: 3.2/5. From 99 votes. Show votes.
Please wait…

Walk away is a song for just about anyone who’s been angry and needed to take some time to calm down.

The first verse refers to how the author has to hold himself from shouting and arguing back (This time, I’ve gotta put my guard down) and clear out his mind without being too frustrated (pick myself up off the ground, take the pain). The author states how arguments are just a trivial matter that passes quickly and shouldn’t be prolonged too much (it’ll pass, the swelling never really lasts) and that he has learnt life-long lessons from the ones he chose to argue on and on (but the scar remains remind me that I’m still living).

The chorus comes in where the author begins to tell how in an argument, the two arguers are too angry to realize what they’re actually fighting for, and how they just want to win whilst being clouded purely by emotions (Well it’s not too late, it’s really not worth the fight, no one’s right). The author then says that they should just take a break and walk away for a while to take a breather.

Walk away can refer to the author taking a quick walk around somewhere peaceful like a park to calm himself down. It can also mean that he wants to walk away from the argument as it seems unnecessary and strains relations with others for no reason. The author then emphasizes how the longer the argument gets, the heavier toll it will take on each side and eventually, both of them may not even like each other anymore (Well the bigger that you come, Oh the harder you’re gonna fall) and that they should walk away before it gets too big of a problem.

The second verse describes what happens after arguments. The author states how even if one side wins or loses (Did you win? Or maybe did you lose?) the argument doesn’t matter and has only worsened the two sides’ relations (now you’re gonna lick your wounds anyway). The two may have been very close friends, sharing secrets they wouldn’t tell anyone. Since they’re now enemies after the fight, they would possibly tell out these secrets to others as an act of petty revenge (when it comes back to you).

The author states how when people are angry after an ended argument they tend to fall and will need to calm themselves down using their own assets (parachute). But if they choose to walk away, they can not only help themselves but their friends too as they can ask their friends to pick them back up off the ground by borrowing their assets instead of being a loner that attacks everyone unnecessarily (used pair of shoes).

The song then ends by repeating how important it is to walk away and lose sometimes, rather than winning and losing an important person in your life.

– song meaning written by u/potlahᅠon r/GreenDay

This time I gotta put my guard down
Lift myself up off the ground
And take the pain
It’ll pass, swelling never really lasts
But the scar remains reminds me
That I’m still living

Well it’s not too late
Oh it’s not really worth the fight
No one’s right
Well it’s time to walk away
Walk away

Well the bigger that you come
Oh the harder you’re gonna fall
Walk away

Did you win?
Or maybe did you lose?
Now you’re gonna lick your wounds anyway
Go back to you

When you fall
You’re gonna need a parachute
Or a used pair of shoes
To go and walk away

Well it’s not too late
Oh it’s not really worth the fight
No one’s right
Well it’s time to walk away
Walk away

Well the bigger that you come
Oh the harder you’re gonna fall
Walk away

10. Dirty Rotten Bastards

Rating: 4.0/5. From 119 votes. Show votes.

The author is singing and trying to find reasons to go to therapy (calling all demons this is the season), from inviting his friends (we’re the retarded and the brokenhearted) to inviting fellow drunks in the bar (here’s to the wasted). Despite the author knowing how his alcoholism is affecting his life (rejects and waste of times), he doesn’t care and continues amping it up (gonna take it further, get away with murder); affecting those around him who want to help him (no one here is getting out alive). Instead of going to therapy, the author instead decides to bring himself to the nearby pub and start singing along with the drunks (here’s to all God’s losers… sing along with me).

He tries to justify his actions with his age and maturity (we’re too old to be misbehaved) but deep down, knows how stupid he’s being (we sold our souls and so ashamed of ourselves) and that this will only end up with him being shitfaced again and scolded by his family and friends (so we wait for Miss Judgment Day, write me a letter and send it to my grave). But for now, the author is busy getting drunk (all fucked up beyond intervention) and spewing nonsense (fuck the world this is my revolution) perhaps going through one of the worst blackouts he’s had in a while (I’m on a bender, it’s one for the ages).

His drunken state makes him flirt with Juliana Homicide, who pushes him on the edge of cheating (make my demons come to life, won’t you be my blushing bride) as well as crossing into drug abuse (chop me a line of my best friend’s ashes). Although the author has enough sense not to fall for the drug offer, he’s still drunk and gets irritated at Juliana for giving seemingly unenthusiastic responses (what the fuck does OK stand for) to his drunken drivel (when the afterlife is nothing worth dying for). The author wakes up extremely hung over the next day without memory on how much damage he had caused in just one night as he only recalls being escorted out in an ambulance (we’re carried away).

Yeah, yeah, yeah

Calling all demons, this is the season
Next stop is therapy
We’re the retarded and the brokenhearted
The season of misery

Here’s to the wasted, I can almost taste it
The rejects and waste of times
Gonna take it further, get away with murder
And no one here is getting out alive

Here’s to all God’s losers ra da da da de
The bottom-feeders frenzy
Here’s to all bloodsuckers, sing along with me
‘Cause we don’t say no, scream one, two, three

Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Hey

We’re too old to be misbehaved
We sold our souls and so ashamed of ourselves
So we wait for misjudgement day
Write me a letter and send it to my grave, yeah

All fucked up beyond intervention
Fuck the world this is my revolution
Long lost souls and living in cages
I’m on a bender, it’s one for the ages

I’ve got the urge
To binge and surge
The tables turn
To crash and burn

Juliana Homicide
Make my demons come to life
Well Juliana Homicide
Oh won’t you be my blushing bride

I chopped me a line of my best friends ashes
Dust to dust when the red light flashes
What the fuck does OK stand for
When the afterlife is only worth dying for

I’ve got the urge
To binge and surge
The tables turn
To crash and burn

Juliana Homicide
Make my demons come to life
Well Juliana Homicide
Oh won’t you be my blushing bride
Alright

Well, California’s burning to the ground
And Juliana walks on holy ground
Where there’s smoke there’s fire burning out the lights
‘Cause California’s burning down tonight
Tonight

Calling all demons, this is the season
Next stop is therapy
We’re the retarded and the brokenhearted
The season of misery

Here’s to the wasted, I can almost taste it
The rejects and waste of times
Gonna take it further, get away with murder

“I feel like a 99, but technically I’m a 1. You know, it was an easy song to write. I know that’s where I come from, the 99,  even though I can afford for my kids to go to a good college. It’s interesting: Cops are 99 percenters. Firemen are 99 percenters. That’s where the anarchists are confused. This is much broader than you think it is.”

– Billie Joe Armstrong

The song talks about revolting against the current state of the world (it’s 99 revolutions tonight) and how the 1% of rich people control the world (it’s not one to 99, it’s 99 to one). The author being part of the 99% sees the world crumbling before his eyes (there’s a trouble in the air, a rumble in the streets) as small businesses are overtaken by big corporations (a going out of business sale and a race to bankruptcy). The author tells how this will not just affect the people now, but generations down the line (a common cause and a call to arms for the health of our daughters and our sons) as they will find it even harder to get anywhere with the death of competition and wealth (how the fuck did the working stiff become so obsolete).

As more and more people become obsessed with success, they begin selling out themselves and their family/friends (there’s a rat in the company). The author presses everyone to not do that and band together to fight against the true evil (history will prove itself in the halls of justice and lost souls) as they are already suffering (we live in troubled times from ghettos to an empty suburban home).

12. The Forgotten

Rating: 3.4/5. From 134 votes. Show votes.

The song touches on the people we have forgotten throughout our lives that may or may not have played an important role in our lives (they’re lost inside your memory). This can go anywhere from relationships (your heart’s been broken) to family (an empty hallway from a broken home) to friends (we share the scars from our abandon) that we’ve known and come to understand through our lives. Sometimes these feelings of sentimental nostalgia can push us down dark trains of thoughts (I don’t feel strange it’s more like haunted) to the point of powerlessness from not being able to go back (another moment trapped in time) as they transform into nothing but mere memories (what we remember becomes folklore).

But despite how much we may want to return to happier, simpler times (it’s where your spirit seems to roam), the author states how it’s better that we move on to better things in life (sometimes you’re better lost than to be seen), things that we may not have come across were we not put into the grievances we had to endure (don’t look away from the arms of a bad dream/don’t look away from the arms of tomorrow).

– song meaning written by u/potlah on r/GreenDay

Where in the world’s the forgotten
They’re lost inside your memory
You’re dragging on, your heart’s been broken
As we all go down in history

Where in the world did the time go
It’s where your spirit seems to roam
Like losing faith to our abandon
Or an empty hallway from a broken home

Well don’t look away
From the arms of a bad dream
Don’t look away
Sometimes you’re better lost than to be seen

I don’t feel strange, it’s more like haunted
Another moment trapped in time
I can’t quite put my finger on it
But it’s like a child that was left behind

So where in the world’s the forgotten?
Like soldiers from a long lost war
We share the scars from our abandon
And what we remember becomes folklore

Well don’t look away
From the arms of a bad dream
Don’t look away
Sometimes you’re better lost than to be seen

Don’t look away from the arms of a moment
Don’t look away from the arms of tomorrow
Don’t look away from the arms of a moment
Don’t look away from the arms of love
