1. Creepy stalker song. The author seems to be obsessed over someone and follows said person anywhere (wherever the night takes you, maybe you'll see me too). The author seems to only be deterred by harsh circumstances such as cold weather and bad timing and is willing to stalk his victim any other time.
2. The author is anxious about seeing said person. Assuming this is referring to his crush, he may be doubting himself about something they planned (maybe the time is not right). He's making up excuses about the weather and that she might not show up as time goes by.

Maybe i'll see you tonight
Maybe i'll see you tonight
Wherever the night takes you
Maybe you'll see me too
The colder it gets
You won't see me anymore
But there's still a chance
I might walk to your door
Maybe the time is not right
I won't be seeing you tonight
Maybe i'll see you tonight
Maybe i'll see you tonight

"A guy in the (American Idiot) cast, Theo Stockman, started calling himself the King of Fuck. Then it got into a thing where every time they got ready for a show, the cast members got in a circle, put their hands in the middle and went, 'One, two, three, it’s fuck time!' I just wrote the song. We did it as Foxboro Hot Tubs at a club in New York, Don Hill’s, because we knew some of the cast members would be there. We ended up playing it ten times in a row. We thought it would stay a Foxboro Hot Tubs song. But the more we played it, we thought, 'This is pretty good. Why should we give it to our alter-ego?'"
- Billie Joe Armstrong
Oh, drop your laundry and slam the door
I want your love so give me more
I’m a beggar but I don’t want a dime
Ahhh
Oh baby, baby, it's fuck time
You know I really wanna make you mine
Oh baby, baby, it's fuck time
There’s nothing left to say, yeah
Take a look into my eyes
I wanna hold you 'til you're paralyzed
Oh Amanda Jones, your holy grace
I wanna choke you 'til you're blue in the face
Got dirty thoughts and a dirty mind
Ahhh
Oh baby, baby, it's fuck time
You know I really wanna make you mine
Oh baby, baby, it's fuck time
There’s nothing left to say, yeah
Take a look into my eyes
I wanna hold you 'til you're paralyzed

The lyrics depict the author doing something against his morals for someone. The song begins with the author stating how he is willing to do anything, from talking to carrying out dirty work (Uncomfortable silence/I'm like ultra-violence, I'll kill it if you want me to) but puts an emphasis that he carries out his work with action more than diplomatic means.
The author admits to himself that he’s not a violent or aggressive person out of his line of duty (out of sight, out of mind), and is doing this for the sake of his job (I'm not the hurting kind). In the chorus, it’s notable that despite the author’s violent threats, he prefers making his victims surrender instead of straight up killing or hurting them.
The next verse explores more on the author's work. He seems to be a man who doesn't like much depth to his objectives such as explanations or specifics (stop when the red lights flash). The line I'll trade you blood for dirty cash implies that the author is a man for hire, attacking his 'targets' for money. He also states how he's always in danger at home as it's no different from the catacombs, a dead prison with nothing going on but the constant threat of death around the corner.
In the interlude, the author is talking to himself how he should let go for once and just kill his targets instead of bringing them alive to his bosses like he used to (Just give in one more time). The song fades out with the droning of I'll make you surrender in the author's mind.
On the other hand, the song may possibly be about BDSM where the dominatrix is talking to the author (do you want me to break this silence? I don’t have to be ultra-violent, all you have to do is ask). Out of sight, out of mind may reference society’s general outlook on masochistic sex, and how the dominatrix would have to explain herself in awkward situations against people who frown upon this behaviour. As such, she has to do this in private and keep it on the down low. Since this is for pleasure, the dominatrix is clearly not the hurting kind as she is merely playing a character.
The catacombs describe the ‘sex dungeon’ and the author may describe it as feeling ‘right at home’ because his true passion lies in being dominated (I’ll trade you blood for dirty cash) and he only truly feels in place when he’s in such situations. The line stop when the red lights flash, could refer to their safe word when things get too far (I’ll make you surrender).

Despite the title, the song gives a perspective into why the author is the way he is rather than just proclaiming he’s lazy and doesn’t want to do anything. The author suffers from depression (I’m too tired to be bored, I’m too bored to be tired) and is too anxious to get out of bed as well (the silence is so deafening). It may also be possible the author is trying to recover from a really bad hangover or a combination of both (I’m too mental to go crazy, I’m too drunk to be pure). As a result, insomnia also takes its place as a result of all the previous symptoms (my mind is playing tricks on me, I can’t sleep).
The author rejects all external help thinking he can tough it out since it’s all in his head (I don’t want your sympathy, your honesty, I just want some peace of mind). He rather just lie in bed and hope his head clears up (as I roll over and play dead). As a result of this, he gets worst and worst and even calls his friends out (it’s really good to see you but) for the smallest of things due to his irritability (there’s an odour in the air and I think you look like shit). The author chooses instead of drowning his issues with booze (I can’t stand for falling down, I’m too sick to throw up).

I’m too tired to be bored
I’m too bored to be tired
And the silence is so deafening
It’s like picking at a sore
I’m too mental to go crazy
I’m too drunk to be pure
And my mind is playing tricks on me
And I can’t sleep tonight ’cause I’m so tired
I can’t take it anymore
And with all the liars
Like a prisoner of war
I don’t want your sympathy
I don’t want your honesty
I just want to get some peace of mind
It’s only in my head as I roll over and play dead
I don’t want to hear it anymore
It’s good to see you
But I really must admit
There’s an odor in the air
And I think you look like shit
I can’t stand for falling down
I’m too sick to throw up
Everyone keeps talking
And they can’t shut the fuck up
Cause I’m so tired
I can’t take it anymore
And with all the liars
Like a prisoner of war
I don’t want your sympathy
I don’t want your honesty
I just want to get some peace of mind
It’s only in my head as I roll over and play dead
I don’t want to hear it anymore
I don’t want your sympathy
I don’t want your honesty
I just want to get some peace of mind
It’s only in my head as I roll over and play dead
I don’t want to hear about it
I don’t want to scream about it
I don’t want to hear it anymore

The author is possibly singing about a prostitute he has fallen for (little wild one). Because of her line of job, she meets various types of people (she’s covered in angels, demons and halos now) and as a result, the author also knows what he’s getting into (my heart is in danger, I jumped on a grenade). She has given up on religion for a life of prostitution (she gave up on Jesus for living on Venus, all dressed up with nowhere to go), the contrast of Jesus to Venus showing how she’s living polar opposites.
It may also be possible the author just fell for someone incompatible and is only in it for the sex (my heart is in panic, her eyes look so manic now) aka never stick your dick in crazy. He’s clearly frustrated by her (now that my mind’s gonna blow) but he doesn’t care enough to argue about it and opts to complain about it rather than solving the issue with her (my heart is in danger, she’s strung out on razors now).

She, little wild one

She gave up on Jesus for living on Venus
All dressed up with nowhere to go
I'm drinking the Kool-Aid

The song sets in the middle of a party where the author is playing plenty of drinking games that lead to makeout sessions (do you wanna spin the bottle? truth or dare) and is doing anything to get to make out with the hot girl (you got yourself a pretty little mouth, I think I wanna rub it the wrong way). He succeeds and makes out with her after going through plenty of other girls (it’s a makeout party on another dimension).

Hey, you've got yourself a pretty little mouth
I think I want to rub you the wrong way
Do you wanna spin the bottle? Play a game of chicken?
Well, it's a tongue twister until your lips are bleeding
Ah, anyhow, anywhere
Kiss me there
Oh kiss me there
Ah, scream and shout, truth or dare
Kiss me there
Oh kiss me there
Hey, You're so precious, you're a fucking delinquent
I got myself jonesing and I need some fixin'
It's a makeout party on another dimension
And it's gonna get crowded with some bad intention
Ah, anyhow, anywhere
Kiss me there
Oh kiss me there
Ah, scream and shout, truth or dare

The song touches on a cheater trying to get back with his ex (I lost my way oh baby, this stray heart went to another) and using any sweet talk (you’re the only one I’m dreaming of, I’ll never stray again from you) he can to convince her that he didn’t do it purposely (can you recover baby) and to some extent, even blames her for it (was torn apart by me and you). But his ex isn’t having any of it (I just can’t have you) and he loses her for good this time.
- song meaning written by u/potlah on r/GreenDay
I lost my way, oh baby, this stray heart
Went to another
Can you recover, baby
Oh, you're the only one that I'm dreaming of
Your precious heart was torn apart by me and you
You're not alone
Oh, and now I'm where I belong
We're not alone
Oh, I'll hold your heart and never let go
Everything that I want
I want from you
But I just can't have you
Everything that I need
I need from you
But I just can't have you
I said a thousand times and now a thousand one
We'll never part
I'll never stray again from you
This dog is destined for a home to your heart
We'll never part
I'll never stray again from you
You're not alone
Oh, and now I'm where I belong
We're not alone
Oh, I'll hold your heart and never let go
Everything that I want
I want from you
But I just can't have you
Everything that I need
I need from you
But I just can't have you
You're not alone
Oh, and now I'm where I belong

Oh, I'll hold your heart and never let go

The song is about the narrator moving away from a drug-addicted girlfriend named Ashley. The song begins with the narrator describing Ashley running around, crying out bloody murder and bumming around with high mood swings (crying on my cold shoulder) while under the influence. The words ‘cold shoulder’ shows the narrator's loss of interest in her as he's slowly giving up and beginning to realize what's wrong.
He reminisces about the past, how Ashley only used the narrator to get what she wanted (you used to dangle my heart with your puppet strings, dangled your desires right in front of my face) but being blinded by love, the narrator just did what she wanted and gave her everything despite him not gaining a single thing (led me to the well but wouldn't let me drink), and in fact beginning to lose out (Swallowing my pride I never even got the taste)
Slowly but surely, the narrator begins to realize what she is (time comes around and I'm not so naive) and how she's not the girl he always dreamt she was and what he wanted (finally lost touch 'cause you're so out of reach). As time goes by, the narrator sees through all her lies (You say that you're fine but I know that you ain't) and her true self (You're looking like hell and you're no fucking saint). He also remarks how distant she is in the relationship, never paying much attention or giving time to be with the narrator (You are where you are) and what the narrator is expecting from her, he's never going to get (wish on a shooting star). All she is to him in the present is a filthy memory.
The narrator now reveals what drugs she was on (cigarettes, liquor, speed/crystal meth). The fact that the narrator says 'we used to call it speed, but now it's crystal meth', indicates that the narrator has broken up with her for a long time ago. The narrator recollects himself from his train of thought and looks around to see Ashley passing by. She looks horrible and clearly drug addicted. He's scared to death by her look, and how she looks like she could pass out and die at any moment. But it doesn't really matter now since all she is to him, is a careless memory that he could care less about. The narrator walks away while the name Ashley plagues his mind.

"Year of the rat, last of the litter" = Billie
The song starts with a self-description of how the author is dangerous (they say my middle name is Danger). The author goes wild on the dance floor trying to impress someone (I’m out of control when I see your pretty face). The term ‘kill’ hints at killing it on the dance floor or with his looks rather than a literal murder.
The lyrics start gearing towards things that a person would need to kill someone (bullet in your magazine) and the author is saying how he wants to pursue her knowing the danger he brings (I am the motor in your crashing car) being the sole thing that may cause her misfortunes. The Arab spring were protests against the government for low standards of living and Cherubs are creatures that act under God. Perhaps this implicates how he is a figure of faith in times of desperation or the thing pushing people forward as a leader. In this case, he is the danger.

Year of the rat, last of the litter
Somebody shot the babysitter
They say my middle name is danger
The kind you keep away from strangers
I say whoa
I’m out of control
Well baby when I see your pretty face
I say whoa
God rest your fucking soul
Cause baby, baby, I was born to kill
I pulled the trigger for the shooting stars
I am the motor in your crashing car
I am the cherub in the Arab spring
I am the bullet in your magazine
I say whoa
I’m out of control
Well baby, when I see your pretty face
I say whoa
God rest your fucking soul
Cause baby, baby eyes
Well baby, baby eyes
Well baby, baby, I was born to kill

The author is so entranced by Lady Cobra that he sees her as a black magician. He goes through her crazy rituals (that may just be a metaphor or exaggeration of what he’s feeling) and says how if he kills her for a ritual, they can’t be friends and he can’t serve as her loyal test subject anymore (I don’t wanna suicide, I don’t want this to end, I just wanna be your friend).
- song meaning written by u/potlah on r/GreenDay
Well I met a girl named Lady Cobra
Her black heart beats crimson and clover
She gives me chills and fever blisters
She's serving spells and voodoo shakes
Well she just wants to get me high
Stick a needle in my eye
Reeks like hell lost in temptation
Rubbing on my inner demons
I don't want a suicide, I don't want this to end
I just want to be your friend
Cuddle up with me real tight
Talk to me by candlelight
Do you want to play a game of Twister?
Like a dirty old man with a babysitter?
I don't want a suicide, I don't want this to end
I just want to be a friend
Well, I don't want to make you cry
Cross my heart and hope to die
Drawing blood and lonely stars
Drinking piss for cheap guitars
I don't want a suicide, I don't want this to end
I just want to be a friend
Ah, your friend

The story starts with the author taking a ride through his life, reminiscing and having constant flashbacks to how his life used to be (taking a ride to my old haunts). Somewhere along the lines, he remembers Lady Cobra and the times they enjoy exchanging blood samples (she’s in my blood) as they use so many drugs that they’re blood has become the drugs. He recalls how they both used to spend full nights together (I reside in my NIGHTLIFE) and that he used to spend all his free time coloring the color books he purchased on eBay whilst imagining deep conversations on his favorite colors with Lady Cobra (my favorite color’s candy apple) whilst deep in thought about her as the night continues (she resides in my mind of my NIGHTLIFE).
Lady Cobra enters the scene and reads the mind of Billie Joe. She uses the power of telepathy to get into his mind and asks him to come and try out her new car (what’s that I hear you wanna go for a ride?). It is evident from the next line that the two are close and have exchanged contacts along with house addresses with each other as Lady Cobra extends her invitation to her house to Billie (don’t be afraid boy to come inside). As his best friend, Lady Cobra knows that Billie needs a new candy apple red crayon and lures him to her house with this convenient turn of events (I got the thing that you want, the fix that you need) as he knows how much Billie loves his candy apple crayons like the whore he is (chase this with a little lust and greed).
Using the two deadly sins, Lady Cobra accesses her inner demons and teleports to Billie. She sits on his shoulder and persists for him to come over as her heart palpations begin to rapidly increase in lieu of the excitement she garners for Billie to try out her new crayon (my black heart beats crimson and clover). Noticing that Billie is too focused on his coloring book, she instead opts for the wonders of technology and asks Comcast to call Billie (operator patch my boy in). But as Billie is still staring at his colorful creation, Lady Cobra takes more evasive maneuvers to dodge this next level ignorance. She becomes the mighty NIGHTLIFE and literally goes into Billie’s ear and under his skin.
The chorus hits again with the beautiful, sonorous sound of vocal filters; deeply demonstrating how entranced and hypnotized he is at Lady Cobra and the beautiful friendship they have created. Inside Billie’s mind, Lady Cobra hears the tune echoing through his mind and adds her little pinch of seasoning to it. She makes their friendship even more beautiful by inducing euphoria through dopamines in Billie’s mind (short of breath, heart beats fast) and also, makes sure they stay friends because she deeply values him as a friend and doesn’t see him as more than a friend (sounds like love but you know it won’t last).
As she continues to venture through Billie’s mind, she sees that time they went to prom together and the first time he tried grape juice in a champagne bottle (cheap champagne stain on an even cheaper suit). She smiles at this beautiful memory and thinks back about the times they missed the bus because Billie took too long to change his pants after wetting himself because he didn’t wake up to use the toilet that one time (hope there’s more in your pants than a bus route). But things go south as Lady Cobra slips from Billie’s slippery brain and ends up in his bloodstream (red velvet halls). She’s stuck in her sweet best friend (sugar-coated walls) and tries to swim against the blood flow.
She ends up in his rectum where she is stuck hanging on to his feces (girls hand on bar stools) as she notices the anus expanding to let loose the rains down in Africa (late last calls). Billie takes a shit (it’s too late I already cut the bakes) as Lady Cobra thinks about all the shitty things that have happened in her life to lead up to this shitastic moment (this town is full of snakes, mistakes and whiskey shakes). However, Lady Cobra’s words finally get to Billie and he makes his way to his best friend’s home (I am rolling strolling into town).
Using her demonic powers, Lady Cobra cleans herself as she quickly navigates through the sewers to get back home before Billie whilst still using her telepathic powers to influence him to walk in the correct direction (come inside, it’s just you, sugar town, get me up). Billie thinks his mind is being a wanker again (is it me or am I going crazy?) but he knows that his town is such a nice and happy place that even if the voices in his head were nothing more than schizophrenic tendencies, he would end up in a happy place anyways (this dirty city is my sugar town).
He eventually ends up at Lady Cobra’s place and sees her in all her glory (my little angel of death is my Nightlife) with a gift in hand. She teases Billie (gonna make a move before I get bored) as she knows he’s very shy and introverted to lighten up the mood. As they used to be in the choir together, Lady Cobra offers to sing to make him feel better because she knows he ran out of candy apple crayons (if you wanna explore my vocal cord). Billie doesn’t seem to be feeling better even though his favorite TV show, Johnny Johnny is showing on TV with baby coco dancing.
Lady Cobra decides it’s time to give the surprise present. As she hid it in a place where Billie would never find, Lady Cobra quickly hugs him and positions his hand on the one place he would never think to look (one hand on the hooch). By queefing, the gift is revealed and Billie is absolutely beaming with joy. Lady Cobra wants to celebrate and offers Billie to stay for a bit to play board games (why don’t you stick around for one more round) which he obliges. They play a game of Dungeons and Dragons where Lady Cobra is the DM (cause I’m the ringleader, I run the show).
The song ends with the two enjoying their time as platonic best friends, spending the night playing Dungeons and Dragons.

My favorite color is candy apple, girl
And she resides in my mind and my nightlife
(Lady Cobra)
Short of breath, heart beats fast
Sounds like love but you know it won't last
Cheap champagne stain on an even cheaper suit
Hope there's more in your pants than a bus route
Red velvet halls line these sugar-coated walls
Girls hang on bar stools for late last calls
This town is full of snakes, mistakes and whiskey shakes
It's too late, I already cut the brakes
(Billie Joe)
Well, I am rolling, strolling into town (Come inside)
Is it me or am I going crazy? (It's just you)
This dirty city is my sugar town (Sugar town)
My little angel of death is my nightlife
(Lady Cobra)
You better make a move before I get bored
If you wanna explore my vocal chord
Baby girl coco dancing the cooch
One hand on my knee, one hand on the hooch
Why don't you stick around for one more round?
This place is a circus and I know you'll be my clown
Cause I'm a ringleader, I run the show
And only when I tell ya will it be time to go
(Billie Joe)
Taking a ride to my old haunts
She's in my blood, I reside in my nightlife
My favorite color is candy apple, girl
And she resides in my mind and my nightlife
(Hey boy) She is my nightlife
(Hey boy) She is my nightlife
(Hey boy) She is my nightlife
(See you later) She is my nightlife

The song describes the author encountering an overdressed female in a party. From her shining contact lenses (smell your technicolor in your eyes) to overkill neon body paint (wearing Day-Glo where you know it hurts), the author can’t help but be entranced by her (wow that dirty dress is so loud). In fact, it’s such an eye catcher that the author describes it similar to staring at the sun.

Smell your Technicolor in your eyes
Makes me sick with pleasure in my mind
Shake it like it's so enlightening
Staring in the sun that's blinding
Like a bottle rocket in the sky
Dressed to the nines like a black cat's eyes
You’re such a beautiful mess tonight
Wow, that dirty dress is so loud
Wow, that dirty dress is so loud
And it goes
Wearing a psychotic red alert
Your bouquet of flowers in the dirt
Radioactive and primal
Nuclear and so delightful
Wearing day-glo where you know it hurts
Dressed to the nines like a black cat's eyes
You’re such a beautiful mess tonight
Wow, that dirty dress is so loud
Wow, that dirty dress is so loud
And it goes
Smell your Technicolor in your eyes
Makes me sick with pleasure in my mind
Shake it like it's so enlightening
Staring in the sun that's blinding
Like a bottle rocket in the sky
Dressed to the nines like a black cat's eyes
You’re such a beautiful mess tonight
Wow, that dirty dress is so loud
Wow, that dirty dress is so loud
And it goes

“I felt like there was this connection with R&B of the past and R&B of the present. What she did, her knowledge of old music and old Motown, it’s something in the chain of music that is gone forever. She never got the help she needed. I know what it’s like to go down a really dark path and I have had good people around me to help me survive. Maybe that’s why I was able to relate to it.”
- Billie Joe Armstrong
A song dedicated to Amy Winehouse, the song goes through all the scenarios the author could’ve been through with her but couldn’t. The author tries to understand the events that happened (is your heart singing out of tune, are your eyes just singing the blues?) whilst going through all her stuff (dirty records from another time) knowing that she’s gone for good (some blood stains on your shoes). Despite this, there’s only so much he can understand as an outsider to the circumstances (I barely really know your name) and can only use the news/media to unravel the story (burning rhythms and posting lies, a bunch of fools who drown in shame).
A sense of guilt hits the author as he thinks that he could have made a difference in her life (do you wanna be a friend of mine?). In looking deeper, all the things that the suicide victim went through never really helped her much (lucky charm... but never really kept you safe) and even her short attempts at solving her issues ended up being not enough (and you walked away from your drink). The author hopes that in another life, perhaps they could be friends (may I have this last dance by chance if we should meet?).

Is your heart singing out of tune?
Are your eyes just singing the blues?
Dirty records from another time
Some blood stains on your shoes
No one really knows about your soul
And I barely really know your name
Burning rhythms and posting lies
And a bunch of fools drown in shame
Amy don't you go
I want you around
Singing woah, please don't go
Do you wanna be a friend of mine?
Do you wanna be a friend of mine?
Did you tattoo a lucky charm
To keep you out of harm's way?
Warding off all evil signs
But never really kept you safe
Now you're too young for the golden age
'Cause the record bin's been replaced
27 gone without a trace
And you walked away from your drink
Amy don't you go
I want you around
Singing woah, please don't go
Do you wanna be a friend of mine?
Do you wanna be a friend of
Amy please don't go
Amy please don't go
Is your heart singing out of tune?
Are your eyes just singing the blues?
Dirty records from another time
Some blood stains on your shoes
May I have this last dance
By chance if we should meet?
Can you write me a lullaby?
So we can sing you to sleep
Amy don't you go
I want you around
Singing woah, please don't go
Do you wanna be a friend of mine?
Do you wanna be a friend of mine?
Do you wanna be a friend of mine?
