Notes: Green Day’s debut EP was recorded in December of 1988. The band changed their name from Sweet Children just prior to the EP being printed. Green Day never came up with a title or any artwork so Lookout! Records just used the first song on the EP for the title and designed a logo for the bands new name for the cover. The EP would later be added to the compilation album 1,039 smoothed out slappy hours. As for the subject matter of the EP, Billie says “All the songs from the 1000 hours 7′ are about the same girl.”

1000 Hours is a simple love song that describes the way you feel when you're infatuated with someone - all you dream of is being with this person because that's the only thing that makes you feel happy and complete. You're falling deeper and deeper into this "love trance", and the whole world seems to become beautiful when you're with the one you love.
This is one of the songs that Armstrong wrote about a girl he used to be in love with, named Jennifer (his best friend's sister). She was older than him and didn't want to get into a relationship with a young and inexperienced guy, but he was obviously ready for that relationship, and so he expressed his feelings in songs.

2. Dry Ice
This is one of the songs that Armstrong wrote about his best friend's sister.
The narrator is expressing his genuine feelings towards a girl that inspired him to write this song. He is deeply in love with her, keeps dreaming of her and wants her to be by his side, but he doesn't know if she feels the same way. He doesn't find enough courage in himself to write her a letter, his pen is "writing wrong" and he decides to express his feelings in a song, hoping that she will hear him and understand how much he really needs her.

This song is about love at first sight. The narrator lost sleep and peace because of this person he is so charmed by. He's only seen them once, but it was enough to cause these love-filled thoughts to take over his mind. They are only friends and he doesn't dare tell them how he really feels - all he can do is hope that this wonderful infatuation never ends, and keep dreaming of arousing the same feelings in the one he loves.
This could be another song written about Jennifer, the mysterious girl that rejected Armstrong because she didn't believe his feelings were true ("I wasn't quite there as far as she was concerned, but I was there. I was down. I knew what was up, but she wasn't willing to take that risk so..." - Armstrong).

4. The One I Want
Most likely another song inspired by the author's feelings towards his best friend's sister. In this song, he mentions that she already knows how he feels about her, and so he's wondering why they are still not together and finds no reasons - she made him feel this way, and now she's the only one that he wants. He believes that this love he feels towards this girl will never end. When a teenager falls in love, the feeling is so strong and overwhelming that it seems that it will last forever. It may or may not last, but at the moment it sure feels like this is the love you will feel for the rest of your life.
