John Lennon cover

As soon as you’re born, they make you feel small
By giving you no time, instead of it all
Until the pain is so big, you feel nothing at all

A working-class hero is something to be
A working-class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home, and they hit you at school
They hate if you’re clever, and despise a fool
Until you’re so fucking crazy, you can’t follow their rules

A working-class hero is something to be
A working-class hero is something to be

When they’ve tortured and scared you for 20-odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can’t really function, you’re so full of fear

A working-class hero is something to be
A working-class hero is something to be

They keep you doped up with religion and sex and TV
And you think you’re so clever and classless and free
But you’re still fucking peasants as far as I can see

A working-class hero is something to be
A working-class hero is something to be

There’s room at the top, they’re telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like all the folks on the hill

A working-class hero is something to be
A working-class hero is something to be
A working-class hero is something to be
A working-class hero is something to be
A working-class hero is something to be
A working-class hero is something to be

If you want to be a hero, well, just follow me
If you want to be a hero, well, just follow me

A simple love song. The author describes this feeling as hearts colliding. The author describes their love as love at first sight and how she’s his flame in his mind’s eye. The author says how he knew their romance would stand the test of time (I knew it from the first kiss) and that tonight their hearts collide.

song meaning by u/potlah on r/GreenDay

Love conquers every time
When two hearts come to collide
You’re the card in my Valentine
And the candy hearts in my mind

When true love is the rule
And you’re nobody’s fool
The shapes come into the light
And it was love at first sight

Baby, baby, you’re the light
And the flame that burns in my mind’s eye
When triumph leads into bliss
And I knew it from the first kiss

Tonight, hearts collide
Hearts collide
Hearts collide

When triumph leads into bliss
And I knew it from the first kiss

Tonight, hearts collide
Hearts collide
Hearts collide

Tonight, hearts collide
Hearts collide
Hearts collide

Tonight, hearts collide
Hearts collide
Hearts collide

Tonight, hearts collide
Hearts collide
Hearts collide

In this song, Christian is going through a quick sanity check as night begins to fall (lights out, here comes the night, as the darkness falls over the light, there goes the day). He fears his own life everyday since he’s being hunted down by the government (And this fear that comes won’t go away) and he’s lost track of how long he’s been on the run (And I’m losing track of time). As time passes, he begins to contemplate suicide as he can’t find anyone out there to help him (And I’m living out my private suicide).

He feels his sanity dying slowly as he falls and drops unconscious. He falls into a coma, trying to battle death (I lost myself in the space between heaven and hell). He gets a quick flashback on his life seeing how he’s wasted all his time being a government tool (Did I waste my time losing the way?). He eventually comes to his senses and wakes up in a hospital.

– song meaning written by u/potlah on r/GreenDay

Lights out
Here comes the night
As the darkness falls over the light
Lights out
There goes the day
And this fear that comes won’t go away

And I’m losing track of time
In the corners of my mind
And I’m living out my private suicide (Lights out!)

Lights out
I lost myself
In the space between heaven and hell
Lights out
Finding my way
Did I waste my time losing the way?

And I’m losing track of time
In the corners of my mind
And I’m living out my private suicide (Lights out!)

Lights out!

Lights out
Here comes the night
As the darkness falls over the light
Lights out
I lost myself
In the space between heaven and hell

And I’m losing track of time
In the corners of my mind
And I’m living out my private suicide (Lights out!)

153. Too Much Too Soon

The song describes 2 people – a girl and a guy. The girl is living her life at a very high speed, she always needs more and it’s still never enough. Whereas the guy is always complaining about how it was better before and is living his life in anticipation of an end. They both don’t know when to stop and reconsider, so they’re taking it “too much too soon” and when it’s too late to look back, their lives suck and they can’t change anything now.

Since Too Much Too Soon is an American Idiot outtake, it is possible that the characters in this song are Jimmy/JOS and Whatsername – she’s the one who’s “always living like she’s running out of time”, and he’s the one who’s living in the past. It is indeed possible since Whatsername is really someone who’s always running and always wants more. Jesus is never satisfied, always thinks something is wrong and maybe before was better than now. In the end they both lose.

It’s also possible that the male character in this song is an image of George W. Bush, who always tries to force his outdated views on everyone. “So God bless your fucking past and to hell with your glory” – he wants to change the world to something he considers right, and without realizing that he might be wrong he’s taking it “too much too soon”.

She’s always living like she’s running out of time
Too much just ain’t enough to keep her satisfied
Her plastic card is filled with nothing comes to mind
It’s now her occupation and she’s overqualified

The looks are always so deceiving
The truth is always misconstrued to you

Too much too soon
Too little and now you’re coming unglued
Too much too soon
Too late and now it sucks to be you
Too much too soon

Too much too soon
Too little and now you’re coming unglued
Too much too soon
Too late and now it sucks to be you
Too much too soon

He’s talking shit about how it was better way back when
He lives every waking moment as a means to an end
We are! We are! But I’m not, I never used to be
So God bless your fucking past and to hell with your glory

The looks are always so deceiving
The truth is always misconstrued to you

Too much too soon
Too little and now you’re coming unglued
Too much too soon
Too late and now it sucks to be you
Too much too soon

Too much too soon
Too little and now you’re coming unglued
Too much too soon
Too late and now it sucks to be you
Too much too soon

She packs her bags
This is goodbye
So bon voyage
Farewell
See you in hell
I hope you rest in pieces (fuck you!)

Looks are always so deceiving
The truth is always misconstrued

Too much too soon
Too little and now you’re coming unglued
Too much too soon
Too late and now it sucks to be you
Too much too soon

Too much too soon
Too little and now you’re coming unglued
Too much too soon
Too late and now it sucks to be you
Too much too soon

154. Shoplifter

This song is about taking responsibility for your actions and dealing with the circumstances. You can steal until you get caught – but when you do get caught, be ready to pay for your crimes.

Shoplifter is an American Idiot outtake, so it’s most likely connected to the story line of the album, especially considering that the name of the leading character (Jimmy) appears in the lyrics. When Jesus of Suburbia started his life in the City, he might have practiced shoplifting. Besides, in East 12th Street there is a line “Jesus’ filling out paperwork now at the facility on East 12th street”, which might be referring to him doing community service for some type of crime that he committed. The line in Shoplifter “now that you serve the community” could be said about the same thing. So it’s possible that Jimmy was shoplifting and got caught.

– song meaning courtesy of GreekStinkBreath.net

Shoplifter, you’ll never learn
When you commit the crime
Shoplifter, you’re getting burned
And now you got to do the time

It’s a 1, 2, 3 on the felony
Well, not everything is free
Now that you serve the community
It’s the life of a petty thief

It’s not considered stealing
Unless you’re getting caught
But you’ll be caught stealing
Trying to take something you haven’t got

Shoplifter, you’ll never learn
What lies behind your back
Not a burglar or a bank robber
Just some kleptomaniac

Attention!

It’s not considered stealing
Unless you’re getting caught
But you’ve been caught stealing
Trying to take something you haven’t got

Shoplifter, you’ll never learn
When you commit the crime
Shoplifter, you’re getting burned
And now you got to do the time
And now you got to do the time
And now you got to do some time

155. Governator

Rating: 3.5/5. From 35 votes. Show votes.

Another political outtake from American Idiot – this song is about the governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger (Governor + Terminator = Governator). The former Mister Universe and an actor known mostly for playing the roles of brainless killing machines suddenly decided to run for governor of California from the Republican Party. Moreover, he won.

Being California residents, Green Day are obviously not too pleased with how things turned out – “he’s on your side, gonna throw you aside”, they don’t believe in his good intentions. Unfortunately, a lot of people voted for the “terminator” because of his popularity as an actor and not because they truly agree with his political agenda. It all seems like a huge TV show, but the difference is that this one has real people as involuntary participants – “it makes great television watching the world end”. Schwarzenegger doesn’t need a slogan or good political promises – all he needs to do is say “I’ll be back”.

– song meaning courtesy of GreekStinkBreath.net

Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey, hey

He’s at it again and he’s gonna win (Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey)
Gonna take you for a hell ride anyway (Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey)
He’s on your side, gonna throw you aside (Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey)
And let the vultures pick apart what’s left (Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey)
Seems like everything
Was just a fraction of a second from being okay
So run and hide cause we’re all gonna die
And let the vultures pick apart what’s left

I’ll be back
I’ll be back
I’ll be back
I’ll be back
He’s at it again
He’s at it again
And it makes great television watching the world end

He’s at it again and he’s gonna win
Gonna take ya for a joy ride anyway
You’re standing in line, better make up your mind
And let the bastards pick apart what’s left of you
It seems like everything
Was just a fraction of a second from being a dream
So run and hide because we’re all gonna die
And let the government decide what’s left

I’ll be back
I’ll be back
I’ll be back
I’ll be back
He’s at it again!
He’s at it again!
And it makes great television watching the world end

I’ll be back (Hey, hey, hey, hey)
I’ll be back (Hey, hey, hey, hey)
I’ll be back (Hey, hey, hey, hey)
I’ll be back (Hey, hey, hey, hey)

Walk around I see a million possibilities (Hey, hey, hey, hey)
And I know there’s nowhere to go (Hey, hey, hey, hey)
And I can’t comprehend things that’re so real seem so pretend (Hey, hey, hey, hey)
And I know, I don’t know (Hey, hey, hey, hey)

I’ll be back
I’ll be back
I’ll be back
I’ll be back
He’s at it again!
He’s at it again!
And it makes great television watching the world end
I’ll be back
I’ll be back
I’ll be back
I’ll be back
He’s at it again!
He’s at it again!
And it makes great television watching the world end

There are different theories about the meaning of the song since its lyrics are far from obvious. Some people believe that Maria is about a girl that was in a relationship with the narrator, but then left him, and now he’s wondering where she went. Others believe the song is about punk and Maria is just a random name, and by asking “Maria, where did you go?” the narrator is wondering about what happened to true punk, where it went.

It’s possible that Maria stands for anything good that disappeared into nowhere – it may be a girlfriend, it may be punk, it may be a better government or rebellious times. The narrator is wondering where all the good stuff went and why.

Song meaning courtesy of GeekStinkBreath.net

She smashed the radio with the board of education
Turned up the static left of the state of the nation
Turn on the flame, step on the gas
Burning the flag at half mast
She’s the rebel forgotten son
An export of the revolution

She is the first voice of the last ones in the line
She’ll drag the weights to keep the vendetta alive
Bring in the head of the government
The dog ate the document
Someone shot the president
And no one knows where Maria went

Maria
Maria
Maria
Where did ya go

Be careful what you’re offering
Your breath lacks the conviction
Drawing a line in the dirt
Because the last decision is no
It’s No

She smashed the radio with the board of education
Turned up the static left of the state of the nation
Turn on the flame, step on the gas
Burning the flag at half mast
She’s the rebel forgotten son
An export of the revolution

Maria

Husker Du cover

I’m curious to know exactly how you are
I keep my distance but that distance is too far
It reassures me just to know that you’re okay
But I don’t want you to go on needing me this way

And I, don’t wanna know if you are lonely
Don’t wanna know if you are less than lonely
Don’t wanna know if you are lonely
Don’t wanna know, don’t want to know

The day you left me left me feeling oh so bad
Still I’m not sure about all the doubts we had
From the beginning we both knew it wouldn’t last
Decisions have been made, the die has been cast

And I,don’t wanna know if you are lonely
Don’t wanna know if you are less than lonely
Don’t wanna know if you are lonely
Don’t wanna know, don’t want to know
Don’t wanna know

The phone is ringing and the clock says 4 am
If it’s your friends, well I don’t wanna hear from them
Please leave your number and a message at the tone
Or you can just go on and leave me here alone

And I, don’t wanna know if you are lonely
Don’t wanna know if you are less than lonely
Don’t wanna know if you are lonely
Don’t wanna know, don’t want to know

Social Distortion cover

Well, I’m in another state, another state of mind
I wish that I could be there right next to her
Well, this road leads to this, and this one leads to that
Her voice sends shivers down my spine

These scars in my flesh
I’m bruised and I’m bloodied
Only she knows the pain
That I’ve been through

Talked to her a thousand miles away
There’s tears in her eyes
If I make it back I’m gonna show her
She’s the only one for me

Hitch a ride on the wild side
It’s real hell on wheels
There’s gonna be a fight tonight
I know

Another city we can’t find
Another city left buried behind
As I picture her
The cities burn away

These scars in my flesh
I’m bruised and I’m bloodied
Only she knows the pain
That I’ve been through

Talked to her a thousand miles away
There’s tears in her eyes
If I make it back I’m gonna show her
She’s the only one for me

These scars in my flesh
I’m bruised and I’m bloodied
Only she knows the pain
That I’ve been through

Talked to her a thousand miles away

Bob Dylan cover

Once upon a time you dressed so fine
Threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn’t you?
Yeah, people’d call, say “Beware doll, you’re bound to fall”
You thought they were just kiddin’ you

You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin’ out
And now you don’t walk so proud
Now you don’t talk so loud
About having to be scrounging your next meal

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
A complete unknown
Just like a rolling stone?

Come on

You went to the finest schools all right, Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
Nobody taught you how to live out on the street
But now you’re gonna have to get used to it

You said you’d never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
That he’s not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And say do you want to make a deal?

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
A complete unknown
Just like a rolling stone?

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
A complete unknown
Just like a rolling stone?

Yeah, the princess on the steeple all the pretty people
Drinkin’, thinkin’ that they got it made
Exchanging all kinds of precious gifts
Even to take that that diamond ring, you’d better pawn it babe

You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags with the language that he used
Now go to him now, he calls you, you can’t refuse
When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You’re invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
A complete unknown
Just like a rolling stone?
