Back in September of 2019, Green Day fans were ecstatic to learn that not only would the band be releasing a new album in a few months, but they would also promote it with a massive summer stadium tour alongside Weezer and Fall Out Boy. Flash forward almost two years and a global pandemic later, Green Day finally hit the stage last night headlining the much anticipated Hella Mega Tour on its first date in Arlington, TX.
As the familiar refrain of Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ concluded and the drunk bunny took the stage to pump up the crowd with the Ramones ‘Blitzkrieg Bop’, Globe Life Field was ready to explode.
Are you ready to go fucking crazy? We’ve been waiting two fucking years to go crazy. Now is the time, we’re all together. This is love, this is passion, this is the Hella fucking Mega Tour!– Billie Joe Armstrong
The setlist for the evening was comprised of mostly what you’d expect for a shortened set stadium tour, all the big hits from Dookie and American Idiot alongside staples like ‘Hitchin A Ride’, ‘Know Your Enemy’ and ‘Knowledge’.
The only new addition to the setlist was the band’s recently released single ‘Pollyanna’ which made its live debut a couple of days earlier in a small warm-up show at Cain’s Ballroom in Tulsa, OK.
Green Day notably did not perform any songs from their 2020 album Father Of All Motherfuckers, and in fact, the only album released after 2009 represented on the setlist was the single entry of ‘Still Breathing’ from Revolution Radio.
You can’t blame the band for sticking to a singles heavy setlist on a tour of this sort though and the crowd certainly didn’t seem to mind as they sang every word of ‘Good Riddance’ back to Billie Joe, alone on stage, for the final song of the evening.
Next up for the Hella Mega tour are stops this week in Atlanta, Houston and Jacksonville. You can follow along with each date on the tour in our live threads on r/GreenDay. If you have any questions about your upcoming show, check out our Hella Mega Tour Questions thread.
