Billie Joe brings The Coverups home to Rodeo
The band headlined the Rodeo Music and Art Market on Saturday
Billie Joe took things right back to where it all began on Saturday afternoon, bringing The Coverups to his hometown of Rodeo for a free outdoor show at Lefty Gomez Field. Headlining the community-run Rodeo Music and Art Market, co-organized by his sister Anna, the gig was a homecoming for Billie, who spent his childhood "striking out", as he put it on stage, on that very same baseball diamond.
Looking out at the packed crowd on the field, Billie joked, "I’ve never seen so many people in Rodeo at one time in my life. My mom’s out there somewhere. That’s the queen of Rodeo over there," shouting out his 94-year-old mother, Ollie, watching from the crowd.
The fans were in for a massive surprise midway through the set when C.J. Ramone walked out on stage to join the band, taking over on bass for covers of Ramones staples 'I Wanna Be Sedated' and 'Rockaway Beach', along with 'Do You Wanna Dance?'.
Before wrapping up the afternoon, Billie hinted that this might not be a one-off, telling the crowd, "I wanna do this all the time here. Rodeo’s a perfect spot." To cap off the hometown celebration, he returned for a solo acoustic encore of 'Basket Case', leading a massive field-wide singalong.
