Show notes
Dave Bradley: "They stayed with Dave Fuiglien & John Ayling while here down on Brambleton."
Aaron Cometbus: "A very long, very shitty drive and a lot of use 'the Chalice', our 40-ounce super coffee mug."
Jessica Haggans: "I saw Green Day there when I was 12. Followed by many many years of underground raves in the mid 90's."
Billie Joe Armstrong: We just walked around - we went to Capitol Hill and Sean [Hughes] and me were singing, 'I'm just a bill, I'm only a bill...' Then we met up with this band, 2 CAR FAMILY, and then we were eventually moping around not knowing what to do, so we went to this girl's house and hung out for a couple hours. Then we left and we had to sleep in the van that night. Then some cop comes and wakes us up and he goes, 'What are you boys doing? We're the state police! Let me see some ID' So Sean starts going for his wallet and the cop goes, 'Watch your hand, son, I'll shoot you!' He said, straight up, 'I'll shoot you.' This was in Virginia; it's pretty crazy. Then we went and got a motel, the only one we've really gotten."
gdtourvan1990: "Saturday July 21: Sometime around sunrise a snappily-dressed representative of the Commonwealth of Virginia wrapped his nightstick on my hood and then requested the guys all stand outside the van in their underwear and explain to him what they were doing. He even threatened to shoot Sean! He then announced, “you might be from California, but there’s no sleeping in a van in the City of Fairfax or the Commonwealth of Virginia” The first pic might be of the guys putting the van back together after this most unwelcome intrusion… “Fuck it, we’re staying in a hotel tonight” We headed in to DC and the guys ended up in Room 419 of the Watergate Howard Johnson motel; I think John requested the room. The only hotel stay on the whole tour. After everyone took a hot shower and a dip in the rooftop pool, they had a day off in DC to see the sights. They visited the Capitol, The National Archives and the Viet Nam Memorial. (Imagine what affect that had on a group of 18-year old guys…) Finally, they saw Christian Marclay’s “Directions” show at the Hirshhorn Gallery where you had to walk on 12-inch vinyl albums to view the show and a magnetic tape recording of a waterfall trickled down from the ceiling into a pile on the floor. (Tape Fall; look it up) I took a look to see what became of the old Watergate HOJO and wouldn’t you know it! More boring condos! Sunday July 22: The guys checked out of the Howard Johnson and the phone bill was more than the price of the room! We headed west to Roanoke VA where the guys played the Iroquois Club on 324 Salem Ave. SW and then we went to a wild party on the front lawn of a punk house. The house had a door on the 2nd floor that opened on to nothing and it was too hot to be in the house so everyone just drank in the front yard. At some point a young woman arrived and held up a copy of her sonogram and announced, “Look everyone, I’m having a baby!” Checked out the Iroquois Club today; it’s now called the Candy Factory Condos. WTF!
