Show notes

Mankato Free Press: "After high school, [Josh] Gravelin moved to Minneapolis, where he was entrenched in the city’s punk scene. The members of Green Day and Libido Boyz were his buddies; they all partied and played together in Gravelin's Dinkytown basement."

Adrienne Armstrong: "Billie Joe and I met on the very first Green Day tour when Al Sobrante was in the band. I was one of only ten people at a Green Day gig and me and Billie ended up hitting it off. ...I met Green Day for the first time at a house party in Dinkytown. A friend of mine invited me to a party on the Fourth of July. So I went with my boyfriend [Billy Bisson of Libido Boyz] at the time to check out the bands. I saw a couple songs, then we left to watch the fireworks."

gdtourvan1990: "Tuesday July 3: The sun came up on the prairie and we were still parked on the side of the road. This time we were bit farther off the road, but Sean and Mike got us out and after a few truck stop showers we were on our way north again toward Minneapolis, MN. Some nice kids in St. Paul, MN let us crash at their house in the mid-afternoon for some much needed rest, but it was hot and humid and not very comfortable. I recall seeing one of those flashing bank signs and it read 100 / 100 / 1:00. It was 100 degrees with 100 percent humidity at 1pm. Ugh. I wasn’t equipped with air conditioning, but the guys were used to this by now. Aside from that, not much going on in St. Paul. The real excitement will be in Minneapolis. No show tonight. Wednesday July 4: We decamped St. Paul and headed over to Dinkytown for a house party in the basement of 815 6th Street SE. The house looks so presented in this picture, but this wasn’t the case in 1990. The party was already underway when we arrived and I parked on the lawn. We were to remain here for a few days. There are varying accounts of this party. Some say it was in an “overcrowded basement” and others say there were only 10 people there (including the band). My feeling is a lot more people think they were there than were actually there. And though it was just a house party show on the 4th of July, the band played with a confidence that came from two weeks of touring and a 1000 hours of driving. After the show someone put on Locust Abortion Technician and passed around some LSD. The guys drank Leinenkugel’s from a hinged wax cardboard box. Fireworks were going off everywhere. A frat party across the street simultaneously went on forever, but wasn’t nearly as interesting. A thunder storm rolled through in the evening. It was still hot and humid, but way more fun."

Mike Dirnt: "The show before we went to St. Paul to record 'Sweet Children' EP, we were in South Dakota and the strap broke on my Peavey Patriot, and the guitar fell to the ground. The next day I opened up the case and realised guitar had broken in half..."
