Show notes
"1990 Forehead, Green Day, Face of Decline and Admiral (DC Dischord Records band). What a line-up... For $4!"
SKONJIE6: "I do believe I was there. I live in Florida now, but I used to live in Sioux Falls and visit in the summer. Green Day is kinda wimpy punk band though, FACE OF DECLINE RULES!"
barre_chord_reality: "A good friend of mine was the promoter for nearly all of these shows. I saw tons and tons of bands before they broke it big. Green Day played at Nordic Hall in the early '90s pretty much for gas money. From there they made their way up to Mankato, MN where Billie Joe eventually met his wife."
Terry Taylor: "Green Day at Nordic Hall in Sioux Falls, SD in 1990. This was a start to a long line of punk rock shows I did for Green Day in Sioux Falls. We always got in a lot of mischief when they would come to town and stay at my house. Usually it involved Tre sneaking into local high schools and getting girls to lend him dresses for him to wear and run around like a maniac. Those were good times. Actually the first Green Day show I did, Tre was not even in the band yet."
John Kiffmeyer: "Well, we were in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, with the band ADMIRAL, and we went to a Wendy's salad bar, and I had 1,000 island dressing on top of lettuce with cottage cheese, peaches, ketchup, potato salad, some kind of weird-ass non-dairy strawberry yogurt or some kind of crap - all this stuff just stirred in together. It was just this broth - it was smoking when I brought it to the table. And everybody looked at it and just looked putrid, man, and I - SCHLORP!! - slurped the whole thing down. When I went for seconds, though, I couldn't do it again."
gdtourbus1990: "Sunday July 1: It’s July already. We left Rapid in the morning and headed East across South Dakota headed for Sioux Falls SD. By now we had developed a bit of a routine where Sean and Mike would drive during the day and John and Aaron would take the night shift. Aaron didn’t drive, but he’d keep John awake with endless stories about obscure punk characters from the archive. So today, Mike and Sean were getting us across South Dakota when #aaroncometbus emerges from his slumber and asks “Did we get to Wall Drug yet?” And Mike replies, “We passed that about an hour ago” Aaron was agitated. “You can’t go on tour and not stop at Wall Drug!!!” He almost made us go back. The Sioux Falls Nordic Hall was a truly legendary Midwest punk venue, however, once the guys got playing and the kids were moshing, the floor got really slippery. Did that always happen? This was also the night we really got to know fellow touring band Admiral and even though their van was a Chevy, they were cool. After the show the guys were invited to an after party that got a bit weird. Some creep tried to break one of my windows and parked next to me was a dude in a #volkswagonbus polishing a giant sword. I think someone tried to roofie the guys. I was having my own problems as I couldn’t get in to reverse without someone climbing under me and pulling on my linkage and then my power steering belt snapped. It was just one of those nights. And was this the day we ran over the skunk? The Admiral boys suggested we hit the road before things got worse (and they would have to commence some ass kicking). Both bands had amassed quite the fireworks collection while on tour, so we drove off into the night and somewhere on the side of the road, likely #Iowa, they put on a pyrotechnics spectacular!"
punkbandvans: "Someone lost a sneaker in the middle of this drive or the next one. I remember it fell out of the van at a rest stop and y’all didn’t notice until we got to the venue. A black converse all star if I remember correctly?"
