When I Grow Up

This prophetic essay was written by Billie Joe Armstrong when he was nine years old and a copy of it is contained at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. The photo and it’s transcription was submitted to r/GreenDay by u/beyzabilgier.

When I grow up I want to have a band that can play rock and roll. We will start out at the age of fifteen. Then it will bigger and bigger.

At the age of 20 we will have great big amplifiers and guitars. At the age of 29 we will go to big time. We will play for a lot of people. And then we will have a huge band that can be real loud (or loved). And then play for even more things. We will make a lot of people happy. —(His teacher writes in left margin “Sounds great!”) And we’ll have a lot of money.

But if I don’t get a band then I am going to have to do something else. I could be a football player? That’s what I’ll be. We will travel all over. The plays we will win all of our games. And we will be the champs. But what if I don’t play football. I don’t (know) what I’ll be. I know I’ll be something. The End – (His teacher writes at the bottom, “I’d bet on that!”)
